The Turkish prime minister says it is not enough to merely condemn Israel's attack on a Gaza-bound aid convoy, calling for a firm response to Tel Aviv.

"We believe that those responsible should not be left without paying the price," Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Monday, urging the United Nations to investigate "the unlawful incident in a very transparent and firm manner."

He made the remarks during a joint press conference with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in Istanbul.

Israeli commandos attacked the Freedom Flotilla last Monday, killing at least 20 people and injuring scores of others.

The aid convoy was carrying humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip, which has been under an Israeli siege since 2007.

Erdogan reiterated that the time has come to not only take decisions, but also implement them against Tel Aviv.

The Syrian president, for his part, warned Israel that as long as it continues occupation it will remain an enemy.
