The most senior Canadian general in Afghanistan has been relieved of his command after being charged with inappropriate personal conduct.

Brigadier General Daniel Menard was dismissed as commander of the Joint-Task Force Afghanistan following allegations concerning "inappropriate conduct related to the Canadian Forces Personal Relationships and Fraternization directives" and Brigadier General Jon Vance will replace him as the acting commander, a statement issued by the Canadian military on Saturday said.

Citing military officials, the Canadian public television network CBC reported that Menard was allegedly having an affair with a female soldier.

The Canadian military announced that a criminal probe into the allegations has been launched.

Earlier this week, a military court found Menard guilty of negligently firing his weapon at the Kandahar Airfield. He was fined $3,332 over the incident.

The Canadian army has deployed about 2,500 soldiers as part of the NATO contingent of US-led forces occupying Afghanistan.

Most of the Canadian troops are stationed in Kandahar.

However, Canada plans to withdraw its military forces from Afghanistan in 2011.
