Yemen's deputy prime minister for internal affairs, Sadiq Ameen Abu Ras, has escaped an unsuccessful assassination attempt in southern part of the country.
Abu Ras told AFP on Friday that no one had been injured in the attack. His guards, meanwhile, arrested three of the attackers.
The assailants targeted Abu Ras' convoy as it was returning from the Shabwa province, east of the capital, Sana'a.
In comments to al-Jazeera, the Yemeni deputy head of state said, "We are not accusing any particular party at this point, but the investigation is ongoing," Reuters reported.
Violence has increased in southern Yemen, where many residents complain of unequal distribution of resources in the country following the North and South's unification in 1990.
Yemen is also scrutinized for its widespread poverty, a record among Arab nations.
