Egyptian police say they have taken into custody an American-Egyptian man after several guns were found in his luggage on a flight from New York.

According to officials, the man's luggage was packed with a metal box containing two 9 mm handguns, 250 bullets and several swords and knives.

The man, the police said, was arrested as he attempted to walk past customs after arriving in Cairo, the Associated Press reported.

The suspect was on board of an Egypt Air flight from New York's JFK International Airport on Wednesday.

The officials all spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not allowed to speak to reporters.

A police official confirmed that a criminal investigation has been launched into the incident.
