At least four militants and two troopers have been killed during a gunfight in the Indian-administered Kashmir as a new wave of violence strikes the scenic valley.

The Thursday fighting started after militants shot at the soldiers near the mountainous village of Chitibandi, 50 kilometers north of Indian Kashmir's main city of Srinagar.

Several people were injured on both sides as the gunfight continued overnight.

This brings to four the number of Indian army personnel killed in the region in recent days. An army major and a trooper were killed on Tuesday while fighting militants in the Bandipora district.

The attack breaks a period of relative calm in Indian-administered Kashmir, where militants have been fighting New Delhi's rule since 1989.

Indian troops are in constant conflict with the militants who are seeking independence for the area. Officially over the past two decades, 47,000 people have died as a result of the fighting in Kashmir, although other sources say the death toll may be as high as 90,000.
