Turkish Foreign Ministry spokesman Burak Ozugergin says Turkey and Brazil are not the only countries opposing new sanctions against Iran over its nuclear program.

"It is not only Turkey and Brazil that believe the diplomatic opportunity is still there," Turkey's Hurriyet newspaper quoted Ozugergin as saying in a weekly press conference on Thursday.

He said that Turkey is against new Iran sanctions because they are not a proper means to solve the issue.

Ozugergin noted that Iran merely wants to obtain 20 percent enriched uranium, and stressed that Turkey and Brazil believe that such a deal is still possible.

His remarks came only one day after Brazil's president voiced his opposition against new Iran sanctions.

Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva said that he would also keep working to persuade permanent members of the United Nations Security Council that sanctions against Iran would solve "absolutely nothing."
