A roadside bomb explosion has struck a passenger van in southeastern Afghanistan, killing at least a dozen civilians and injuring several others.

The incident took place in the Tani region of Khost Province on Wednesday.

A local official says a number of women and children were among the dead. He says the vehicle caught fire and the bodies were burned.

Improvised explosive devices are the deadliest weapons used by militants against NATO troops in Afghanistan. However, many civilians also falls victim to such explosive devices every year.

Civilians have been the main victims of violence in Afghanistan, particularly in the troubled southern and eastern provinces.

Thousands of civilians have lost their lives either in US-led air strikes or in the Taliban-led militancy across the violence-wracked country.

The 126,000-strong foreign presence in the country has so far failed to stabilize Afghanistan and bring peace and security.
