One person was killed and another injured by security personnel in Shopian district, J & K who suspected them to be militants. Army men fired against a group of three people in which the one killed was a timber smuggler.
This incident sparked violent protest in the region. A large crowd of local residents gathered in the area and resorted to stone pelting. Angry mob torched two Army vehicles, and the security personnel had to open fire which left four persons again injured.
Army on Saturday ordered a high-level inquiry into the incident and said that an operation was launched in Chawan area in Shopian following police intelligence inputs about terrorists.
“At around 4.15 AM, three persons entered the cordon from outside the village. On being challenged, they started running away leading the troops to open fire”.” One person was killed, another injured and the third one was apprehended and handed over to the police,” he said.
PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti said condemning the incident that during the last 15 months, incidents of human rights violation have been increased manifold and reassured the importance of her demand for revocation of Armed Forces Special Power Act.
